After a successful and enjoyable welcome night, we made our way up to Perisher for our first day on snow for the 2017 season. Moving into its second year, the SMGS ESA has grown from 22 students last year, to 36 student this year. We have students training in SBX, SX, Alpine, FS, Moguls and XC out of Thredbo, Perisher and NSW XC. We are excited to welcome back a few familiar faces, and get to know a few new ones, including our two new ESA Supervisors, Annabel Elliot and Tim Gregson. Both bring a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the role, and are looking forward to the next few months.
Our Welcome Night was a huge success, with Olympians Alice Chilcott and Graham Windeatt giving inspirational and motivational talks, generously sharing their experiences and advice. We also had a quick safety briefing and introductions from key staff members and SMGS Principal. It was a great opportunity for all involved to get to know each other and catch up with old friends.
This morning at Perisher we had a quick briefing with the head of Perisher Winter Sports Club and our fantastic coaches at Blue Cow before the students were broken up into age and discipline training groups and headed out on snow for some skills testing. The snowboard teams went to Front Valley while the ski teams stayed at Blue Cow. With a mixture of blue skies, looming snow clouds and a light wind, conditions were typical for early season. With more snow expected this weekend, the cover should get topped up nicely.
Keep checking our website and your emails for times, training and competition updates, photos and interviews with students, coaches and staff to follow.
