Each year the incoming SMGS Kindergarten cohort is paired with Year 12 buddies. The SMGS Buddy Program was created to help new students in their transition to “Big School” and the program plays a substantial role in our school’s community. This unique thread, that makes up a large part of our school’s fabric, was made even more evident at the ACT-Southern NSW Interschools Championships held at Perisher on 26-28 July.
The Division 6 races at Interschools are all about fun and enjoying a new experience! Our Senior School students assisted by some of younger students helped to ensure that our Division 6 competitors had a memorable first Interschools by getting them all together for bib collection and taking them up to Perisher’s Front Valley for a practice run both days. The seniors then coordinated the group for course inspection and helped them to understand what they had to do on the course. The students then brought all the Division 6 racers back up the chair and made sure they got to the start of their events
Head of Sport, Mr Tim Bland, was proud of our senior students and the leadership role they played, saying, “It was pleasing to see the entire SMGS community assisting with our Junior School students. The care that our Senior School students showed to our younger cohort was wonderful.”
Mackenzie Diver, SMGS Junior School Captain, who had the responsibility of organising the Year 12s and their buddies, said, “It was incredible to see how well the children responded and listened to the seniors giving them some tips on racing.” Mackenzie’s classmate, Isabella Emmert, who was also helping on the day, said, “It was ‘very hectic’ with so many very excited little children all wanting to ski their course. It was such a fun day, and I loved helping out!”
After attending a Snowsport Interschools for the first time, Acting Head of Junior School, Miss Belinda Gough said, “Having our senior school students assist our youngest junior school students on the day ensured that they felt confident, safe and happy leading up to their race. The relationship these students have is wonderful to see!”
The students are now awaiting invitations to the Westpac NSW & ACT Cross Country Championships, 24 August at the Perisher Trails, and the Subaru NSW State Championships, 22-27 August at Perisher.
SMGS Snowsports Program
As you might expect from a school that actively utilises its natural environment, wintersports form an integral part of the program at SMGS.
All students are encouraged to participate in the winter program, from Kindergarten through to Year 11, and programs cater for all skill levels from the very beginners through to elite athletes. Students also have the option of applying to join the Elite Snowsports Academy which caters to students who require a more rigorous training program.
