Snowy Mountains Grammar School (SMGS) is very excited to announce that, beginning in Term 1 2018, students will be able to take a Certificate 3 in Early Childhood Education and Care.

The course will be taught by SMGS teacher Ms Emma Smith, while the Association of Independent Schools New South Wales (AIS NSW) will be the Registered Training Organisation (RTO).  The course is open to SMGS students entering Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2018.

Ms Smith is thrilled to be leading this program, a first for SMGS. She said, “This is a great opportunity for our students, as it means that they can complete a qualification before leaving school. Students can then use it as a stepping stone to further studies or to gain employment immediately after finishing school, working with children in the early years.”

Currently, Ms Smith runs the School of Early Childhood Education and Care, which has been part of the exciting line-up of the SMGS award-winning Academies of Excellence since the program’s inception in 2016. The Certificate 3 in Early Childhood Education and Care is a natural progression and an exciting direction for the school.

The program will take two years to complete and qualifies as a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course. Students can enter the program in Years 10, 11 and 12 at SMGS, with those entering in Years 10 and 11 having the opportunity to complete the program by the time they graduate from SMGS. Students can still undertake their Higher School Certificate (HSC) to achieve an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) while undertaking their Certificate 3 in Early Childhood Education and Care.

To achieve the Certificate 3, students must complete 18 courses (15 core units and 3 electives) plus 120 hours of practical time. SMGS have partnered with local early childhood centres, Gidgillys Early Education and Care, Jindabyne Preschool and Snowy Mountains Care and Early Learning Centre (SMCELC) for the delivery of the practical hours. SMGS and the centres will work together to provide the best option to help students achieve their hours.
