SMGS student athlete, Declan Burke, has capped off a fantastic day for SMGS cross country skiing by taking out the Australian U18 Cross Country Skiing Junior Sprint Freestyle Championships at Perisher.
Competing against athletes from across Australia and the USA, Declan dominated a strong field to win the final ahead of Bentley Walker-Broose of NSW and Cooper Anderson of the USA. After a strong showing in the time trial, Declan moved smoothly through the semi-finals, advancing to the final four. He then continued his great form, leading the finalists home to take top spot on the podium.
Declan was extremely happy with his result against a tough field: “I was stoked to take out the U18 sprint title on Saturday, the final was a tough race full of great skiers, it was a hard race, but I couldn’t be more happy with the result”.
SMGS student athlete, Sam Bylett, finished an impressive 6th place in the under 16 sprint event with Spencer Walker-Broose close behind in 9th place. The race was eventually won by NSW athlete, Hugh Hinckfuss.
“It was a fun race and a great experience. I had a great day.” said Sam, who has begun competing more regularly on the cross country circuit.
Good luck to Declan and Sam for the remainder of the season and good luck to the whole SMGS cross country team as we approach the Westpac NSW & ACT Cross Country Championships on the 22nd August at Perisher.
