It was the final day of competition and unfortunately the conditions weren’t conducive to good racing today. Rain overnight had softened the courses and warm temperatures during the day certainly didn’t help.
Up on Rossignol Racecourse, our division 2 Alpine teams battled it out in difficult conditions with our boys eventually coming away with a 1st place, backed up by individual placings for Ben Wynn (2nd) and Joey Steggall (3rd).
Across the mountain on High Noon, our division 3 boys and girls hit the Ridercross course for the final SkierX event of the competition. In slow, difficult conditions, our girls managed to dominate the top step of the podium with the team taking 1st place and April Wynn taking the individual gold.
Down the mountain on Sundance, the division 1 Alpine competitors were greeted with extremely warm and difficult conditions. The soft snow resulted in athletes leaving trenches down the racecourse which made the turns very bumpy and racing was very tough. The race department were working hard across all courses to try and improve the conditions but ultimately it proved too warm.
Overall, it was a very successful championships with a whopping 34 team and 32 individual medals. Backing up our 2nd place in the Overall Primary Co-Educational yesterday, SMGS was announced as the winner of the Overall Secondary Co-Educational Trophy.
In addition to the medals, many of our teams finished just outside the podium positions and with National invites being release in the next few hours, this could be our biggest Nationals team to date.
Congratulations to everyone who competed across the last 6 days, you have represented the school well and shown everyone what Team SMGS can do. A huge thank you to all the staff and course volunteers who have helped out on the mountain this week and finally, a huge thank you to the parents who continue to support our school and our students. All of this wouldn’t be possible without your support.
Good luck to everyone as we await the National invites and bring on a huge Nationals in a couple of weeks!
