Snowy Mountains Grammar School is very excited to announce that it has been selected as a School of Merit by Mountain Bike Australia, the peak body for mountain biking in Australia. SMGS is one of only nine schools in Australia formally recognised as a School of Meritby Mountain Bike Australia for the provision of school-based mountain biking.

The School provides a structured three-term mountain biking program. In Term 4, students are introduced to cross-country mountain biking by accredited coaches. There is also a focus on fitness and conditioning. During Term 1, students transition to downhill riding at Thredbo. They expand their skillset, and train on a variety of trails. Term 2 is the last term of the program. Students are invited to consolidate both cross-country and downhill skills in school-based competitions, and through the exploration of new trails around the Jindabyne region.

SMGS also has a strong after-school social riding club. Over 50 Junior School students took part in the club in Term 2, 2018. “We’re very excited to continue to expand our mountain biking program at SMGS, as a School of Merit. Students can learn new skills some very talented coaches, and represent the school in a variety of races,” said SMGS Head of Activities, Martin Philpott. Over the years, SMGS has also cultivated relationships with Jindabyne Girl Riders, Thredbo Mountain Bike Park, and Jindabyne Trail Stewardship. The school looks forward to building on those relationships as a School of Merit.
