From Friday 5th March to Tuesday 11th March, seven riders from SMGS travelled to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre for the 2019 Equestrian New South Wales State Interschools Championships. It was a tough week, with some of the best horse and rider combinations in the state, but our riders had some great achievements.
On the Friday and Saturday, Zani Fairfield-Smith, Lily Veleba, Mackenzie Harding, Annabelle Stott Despoja and Ella Dennis competed in eventing, which is a three-phase event consisting of dressage, show jumping and cross-country. Zani finished 6th in the EvA60, Mackenzie finished 2nd in the EvA80, Lily finished 8th in the EvA95, Annabelle 22nd in the EvA80 and Ella finished 18th in the EvA80.
On Saturday, Emily Quodling competed in the 95cm combined training which is a two-phase event consisting of dressage and show jumping. Emily finished 5th in the combined training.
On Sunday and Monday, Sarah Jansen and Annabelle Stott Despoja competed in the dressage championship. On Sunday, Annabelle competed in the preliminary senior intermediate championship, and placed 10th in one test and 11th in the other. Sarah competed in the senior preliminary championship and placed 1st in one of her tests, placing her 6th overall in the preliminary championship. On Monday, Sarah also placed third in one of her tests in the novice championship.
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday saw Mackenzie, Zani, Lily, Emily and Ella compete in show jumping. Emily finished 4th in the 90cm and Mackenzie also finished 4th in the 1m.
It was a super effort from all of our riders, in hot conditions over long days. It will be exciting to await national team selection in the near future.
Thank you to our parents and supporters who allow us these wonderful opportunities.
