Today we participated in a little experiment to see how many notifications students receive during a specific time period. Students were told to come up and mark the board on the specific app that had sent them a notification whenever it occurred during the stage meeting.

We looked at the current SMGS policy, our expectations and the consequences that exist within our school. We explained the issues surrounding apps and the science behind the colours they use in order to attract and engage people. We also looked at the government review that took place last year and the findings of that review.

Students discussed their own concerns with mobile phone use here at school and at home, and the importance of taking some ‘time away’, but needing to continue to feel connected to others. We spoke about the importance of self-control and regulation and our role as a school and how that may develop over time.
