SMGS students raced, jumped, cheered and supported each other through an action-packed and memorable six days in the mountains at the 2019 SSA Northern States Interschools Snowsports Championships!
Our youngest racers kicked off the competition week with many personal bests and podium results, their efforts catapulting them to an impressive second place in the overall Primary Co-ed category.SMGS Kindergarten student Henry Lidster was competing in his first state championships in the Division 6 Alpine GS event. Henry was ecstatic with his individual and team performance, stating that the best part of the competition was trying his best and getting to ski really fast with his friends.
Director of Activities, Martin Philpott, acknowledged the whirlwind of logistics at such a large event and the breadth of new experiences that first-time state competitors encounter, saying, “Congratulations to all the primary students on their medal performances and personal best results. All students showed tremendous resilience under some less than ideal weather conditions.”
Our senior competitors displayed great depth across all disciplines and divisions, with many of our teams taking the top step of the podium in both individual and team categories. SMGS’ senior students closed out an amazing week by placing Second in the Overall Cross Country Secondary Co-Ed categoryand taking home the Secondary Overall Co-ed pointscore, with an incredible 330 points!
Division 2 athlete, Letitia Murphy, competed across the Alpine GS (2nd), Skier Cross, Cross-Country and Moguls disciplines. Letitia reflected on her Interschools participation over the years, saying, “The 2019 Regional and State Interschools are so much fun. They are one of my favourite race series, mainly because of the supportive and friendly atmosphere. This year at Interschools we were spoilt by the conditions and weather that made our competitions seem like a dream. It feels like I’ve raced in Interschools for a lifetime, first stepping onto the racecourse in Kindergarten. Many of my favourite memories are formed at the top of racecourses listening to the music that streams out of the loudspeakers as well as the encouraging cheers from team-mates. This season the Snowy Mountains Grammar School teams made sure they left their mark on the NSW Interschools field, ensuring that everyone had a good time as well as collecting medals left, right and centre.”
Of our school’s participation in this year’s event, Principal Dr Andrew Bell said, “We are proud of our heritage in Interschools snowsports events and the excellent participation numbers across all disciplines and categories in this year’s state competition were a testament to the school’s strong legacy in this competition. Well done to all students who competed across the six-day event. Your team spirit, sportsmanship and efforts were exemplary. A very big thank you to all the staff, parents, volunteers, coaches, Perisher race crews and the Interschools event organisers for all their hard work on the behind-the-scenes planning and execution of such a great event.”
