On 28th November, our Year 7 & 8 debating team competed in the semi-final of the Association of Independent Schools National Virtual Debating competition. Unfortunately, we lost to a great team from Scotch Oakburn College in Tasmania by a single point.

The topic of the debate was “That parents should be legally responsible for their children’s crimes” with SMGS as the affirmative. Both teams vigorously debated their cases with substantial, quality research supporting the different lines of argument. The catch phrase of “You can’t pick and choose parental responsibilities” was countered by “The unpunished never learn”. After a robust debate the teams were separated by just one point, with the negative case victorious.

Scotch Oakburn now move on to the national final against The Scots School of Albury. We wish both teams well in the final congratulations to the SMGS team of Ruby, Georgia, Emily and Abbey who finish the 2019 competition ranked third in Australia!
