SMGS Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Term 1 Adventurous Journey

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award students embarked upon their first Adventurous Journey for 2021 from Friday 26 to Monday 29 March. The expedition party comprised forty students from Years 9 to 12 and were accompanied by six brave staff members (Mrs Batson, Mrs Bell, Miss Fox, Mr Frize, Mrs Siegenthaler and Mr Todd).

Over the four-day journey in the Nimmo Plains area of Kosciuszko National Park, the group walked in excess of 70km, navigating over very steep terrain in dense vegetation, and did so with determination and an exceptionally positive attitude. There were numerous challenges confronted, with snakes, flooded creeks, brumbies, wild dogs, freezing overnight temperatures and navigational difficulties. However, the students embarked on every challenge with impressive resilience and courage. They epitomised our school values at all times and the attending staff were genuinely full of praise for each and every one of them.

The expedition party returned exhausted and with many blisters on their feet, but full of enthusiasm, pride at their accomplishments and a newly found appreciation for the beauty of the natural environment that surrounds our school community.
