Snowy Mountains Grammar School Senior Drama students are hosting an evening to showcase their creative work from this term this Thursday.
Year 11 students will be performing their class production – Mmmbeth a ‘tradgedy’ [sic] written by Alison Williams. This is a humorous, melodramatic parody of Shakespeare’s Macbeth where everything goes wrong. The witches take over the storytelling, Queen Duncan would rather open a donut franchise than die and the murderers murder themselves! The actors break character and swap roles and a fortune-telling Magic 8 ball has more pop-up ads than predictions. It all adds up to madness as Mmmbeth faces a series of hilarious inconveniences on his way to becoming, and unbecoming, the king. Year 11 Drama students have been rehearsing this production over the last 8 weeks as well as taking on backstage roles such as directing, set and costume design, lighting, sound, publicity and promotion.
Following Mmmbeth, Year 12 Drama students will be presenting their Group and Individual Performances. Over the last couple of months, these students have been brainstorming and devising their group pieces based around a handful of words and phrases set for all HSC Drama students by the Board of Studies. The first performance entitled NEWS? questions what makes news today – ratings, sensationalism and marketing? The second performance, Pieces of Perfection is a dark comedy commenting on society’s desire for perfect beauty. The Year 12 students will also be performing their ‘nearly finished’ HSC monologues: exploring the worlds of jealousy, unrequited love, mental illness, the struggles with parents and the importance of a Go Bag. These will need to be refined and polished, in order to be ready to present to the external HSC examiners in approximately 10 weeks.
This is sure to be a night of entertainment and fun whilst giving the Year 11 and 12 Drama students the experience to showcase their work.
We hope to see you all this Thursday, June 17, in The Snowy Shed at 6pm, for an exciting night of thought-provoking theatre and entertainment.
