Snowy Mountains Grammar School had a huge contingent of student’s head to the start gate of the 2022 Thredbo Cannonball Festival.

Grateful to be back on the single track, our students revelled in the return of formal competition and sporting events.

SMGS students had top 6 results in most age-group divisions. Several students headed to the podium across the All-Mountain Assault, Flow Motion Cup, Pump Track Party, and the Australian Open Downhill.

With Thredbo so close to the School campus, many students took up the opportunity to compete for the first time. The range of events and courses ensures that all racers, from the advanced, seasoned racer to those just starting with competitions and racing, have an opportunity to go and strive for their personal best. Our Wednesday sport program and new Mountain Bike Academy, provide further opportunity for students to hone their skills in both gravity and xc disciplines.

Congratulations to all our students that participated in the event over the last few days.

We are looking forward to seeing our students back in action at the Australian Mountain Bike Interschools held at Thredbo between Wednesday, 23 March and Sunday, 27 March 2022. Five disciplines of mountain biking will be held over the five days, including Cross Country, Downhill, Flow, Pump Track & All-Mountain.

The popularity of all mountain bike disciplines in the Snowy Monaro Region has continued to grow substantially over the last few years. The SMGS school programs have hit an all-time participation level facilitating beginner to elite development. This year, following the successful model of the Winter ESA program, Snowy Mountains Grammar School launched the SMG Mountain Bike Academy. Led by newly appointed Josh Armstead and open to Years 7-11 day and boarding students, the pilot program runs for a full day on Wednesdays during Term 1 as a specialist downhill development program, with qualified and experienced coaches at Thredbo. Further program details can be viewed here.

The SMGS Mountain Bike program now has the following elements:

  1. SMGS Mountain Bike Academy
  2. Wednesday Sport Program
  3. K-4 Mountain Bike Club (running on Thursdays in Term 1 2022)
