2022 Jindabyne Club Lions Youth of the Year Competition

On Tuesday 22nd February, Snowy Mountains Grammar School students Alexi Cross (Year 12), Spedding Pearce (Year 11) and Ruby Smith (Year 11) competed in the Jindabyne Club Lions Youth of the Year competition.

The Lions Youth of the Year competition is designed to encourage and foster leadership skills in Australian students. The competition emphasises academic skills, sporting and cultural involvement, public speaking and contribution to school and community.

The competition has three elements: panel interview, prepared speech and impromptu speech.

All of the SMGS students represented the school in a manner they should be proud of. It was most pleasing to see Alexi Cross take out the public speaking prize and for Spedding Pearce announced as the overall winner.

Spedding’s work for Rural Aid, particularly the program Bottles for the Bush, which he championed at SMGS, was a key feature of his application. Spedding will now move on to the next level of the competition, and we wish him luck for this.

Thank you to the President of the Jindabyne Lions Club, Judy Pidcock, as well as the panel of judges who gave their time for the day. SMGS also wishes to thank the organiser of the local club competition Michael Kowalewski for his passion and hard work in ensuring competitions like these continue to exist in our local area.
