Congratulations to the nineteen students who took on what researchers often suggest is one of the greatest fears people experience – public speaking. In the 25th year of the Maria Kisich Public Speaking Competition, the return of alumni to both facilitate proceedings as adjudicators and to enjoy the evening from an audience viewpoint, reflects how the competition is valued.
Speakers ranged from novices in this competition to seasoned veterans, and they presented a diverse range of topics, with lived experiences being the basis upon which many speeches were founded. In this milestone year for the Maria Kisich Competition, there was ‘a first’ – all siblings from one family participating across all the divisions.
Olivia of Year 11 hosted the evening as MC while alumni Alice Hornby, (nee Purss), Year 12 2000, Dr Pieter van Goor, Year 12 2012 and Zani Fairfield-Smith, Year 12 2022, adjudicated the competition.
At the end of the evening, winners for each division were presented their awards by the adjudicators:
Junior Division – Lilly (Topic: Digging Deeper)
Middle Division – Georgette (Topic: Family Reunions)
Senior Division – Hamish (Topic: Procrastination)
Hamish was awarded the overall winner and Dr Bell presented him with the Maria Kisich Trophy. The evening concluded with the announcement of the People’s Choice award winner, which also went to Hamish .
