Four SMGS Year 6 students attended the 2023 HICES Gifted and Talented Camp at the end of August. Students participated in various activities that challenged their minds, met new friends and had a lot of fun!

We caught up with four of the students who attended. Here is what they had to say about their experience.

Will
I had a lot of fun in robotics, learning about building them and coding. I worked with a student from another school, and we got along well. We built Sumo Robots and battled all the other robots. Our robot won both the tournaments.

Madeleine
Chemistry was fun and a fantastic learning opportunity. I learned about the periodic table, atoms, neurons and chemical reactions. We made popping bags, which showed us how chemicals can react and cause an explosion.

Cohen
I learnt the skills to win a debate. We practised debating different topics, and I particularly enjoyed winning the case that AI is not dangerous. I was on the opposing team and argued that AI was not dangerous by explaining that it is a teaching tool.

Emma
I learnt different techniques to use in my writing that I previously didn’t know about. I wrote poems, a twisted fairy tale and a short narrative incorporating fantasy, mystery and myth. Camp is a fantastic way to meet new friends, and I hope to keep in touch with them.
