All students are encouraged to work to their own personal best in all learning situations.

In a smaller school, we are better able to ensure that all students are catered to in their learning needs, whether this be additional remedial support or learning extension to further challenge students. There are multiple strategies to use to ensure students receive the personalised support, including in-class support and instruction, separate small group instruction, extension tasks and general differentiated learning and assessment. SMGS has an Enrichment and Learning Support teacher who can further guide the learning needs, building on the classroom teacher’s approach. In some instances, we recommend further specialist diagnostic assessment and our teachers can offer personalised advice in this area where relevant.

Some students who are identified with learning difficulties are enabled alternative conditions for some of their assessments, which may include, in some specific cases, additional time to complete an examination or short breaks during an examination without losing time, or access to a reader or writer in alignment with approved conditions of support. There is a rigorous process to undertake to access special provisions through the Enrichment and Learning Support Teacher and these are assessed through the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)  for Stage 6 at the HSC level.

Other students in younger grades can access an Individualised Support Plan (ISP) or Individualised Educational Plan (IEP), where supporting documentation, teacher referral and parent input indicate a need to implement alternative educational and instructional strategies for our student learners. Our Enrichment and Learning Support teacher works with students, teachers, parents and external child learning specialists to create tailored programs for the benefit of each child where needed.
