SMGS Debating Team Wins National Championship

National Champions!

Snowy Mountains Grammar School’s Senior Virtual Debating Team has won the National Championship in the Australian National Virtual Debating Competition. The team took out the title after a strong Grand Final win against Kinross Wolaroi School. This is only the second time SMGS has reached the national final and the first time the school has won the championship.

The Grand Final topic asked teams to debate whether the Australian Government should introduce an automation tax on AI in business to support social programs and reduce income inequality. With only one hour to prepare, the SMGS team showed strong thinking skills as they broke down the topic, researched key ideas and built a clear and well-supported argument.

Adjudicators praised both teams for their clear arguments, strong structure and confident rebuttals. One adjudicator said “the intellectual horsepower was evident”, highlighting the clear reasoning and confident delivery from the third speakers on both sides. The panel then reached a unanimous decision in favour of Snowy Mountains Grammar School.

SMGS congratulates Georgie, Sienna, Will and Emma on this outstanding result.

The school also thanks Ms Anne Jones for her expertise, guidance and long-term commitment to building a strong debating program at SMGS.
