Embedded in Our Learning
We live in an increasingly interconnected world. At Snowy Mountains Grammar School, we understand that a well-rounded education nurtures students to value diverse cultures and our natural environment.
Diversity and Sustainability are carefully integrated into our curriculum and programs, and explored through innovative inquiry, project-based learning as well as collaborative student-driven initiatives that deliver real-world impact.
Diversity
In all year levels and across subjects, we foster students’ understanding of different cultures including the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander culture. Our young people learn about the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people’s rich cultural heritage, deep connection to Country, historical and contemporary experiences, and their continuing contributions.
Through our Junior School’s Countries of the World Expo, students develop global awareness as they inquire into another country’s culture and geography and creatively showcase their learning for our community. Languages such as German in Stage 4 and Japanese as an elective in Stage 5 also deepen cultural understanding and appreciation.
The Dragon Boat Challenge, part of the Lake Jindabyne Flowing Festival, is a vibrant and fun community event that our students get actively involved in. Students learn about cultural tradition as well as teamwork and community spirit.
Our International Women’s Day breakfast and International Men’s Day event are opportunities for our young people to hear inspiring stories and cultural perspectives from leaders in our community.
Integrated into Our Programs
On the shores of Lake Jindabyne, within the fragile Alpine ecosystem of Kosciusko National Park, Snowy Mountains Grammar School cares deeply about environmental sustainability.
Through snowsports, mountain biking and water sports, our students regularly interact with our pristine local environment. We focus on protecting and sustaining our beautiful local landscape and wildlife through our learning experiences and hands-on activities.
Our active Environmental Club leads recycling initiatives to reduce environmental impact and raises funds to rehabilitate local wildlife. Students are also involved in local conservation efforts, including cleaning up the Jindabyne Lake foreshore on Clean Up Australia Day and participating in tree planting days in partnership with Keep it Cool and Planet Arc’s National Tree Day. These projects encourage collaborative problem-solving and allow students to apply sustainability concepts to real life.
Living in the heart of a world-class mountain biking region, our Mountain Bike students actively engage with Jindabyne Trail Stewardship, contributing to the maintenance and preservation of local trails. Through these efforts, they support sustainable trail access for our local community and visitors to the Snowy Mountains.
Our School takes pride in its Agriculture subjects and programs. Through these experiences, students learn about renewable resources and sustainable practices for natural and farm environments. Through immersive, hands-on excursions to places like Bombala Forestry Commission and experiential learning, our students can apply classroom learning to real-world settings.
In Geography, students investigate strategies for more sustainable living. Through partnerships such as with NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service, our students learn firsthand about conservation and sustainable practices by getting involved in fieldwork like Mountain Pygmy Possum and Koala surveys. Digital tools allow our students to track and analyse environmental data, enhancing their engagement with modern technology for learning.
Outdoor Education supports our students to learn skills that can minimise their environmental impact and to understand sustainable environmental management, including the ways Aboriginal peoples actively conserve environments.
