Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Gungarlin Adventurous Journey 2025

Exploring resilience, leadership and the beauty of the Snowy Mountains

At the end of Term 3, while most of the Snowy Mountains Grammar School community began relaxing after a busy term, a group of Duke of Edinburgh’s Award students and staff set out on a four-day adventure through the Snowy Plains in Kosciuszko National Park.

The expedition began at Island Bend, with the group hiking into the Gungarlin River Campground, which became their base for the next three nights. Over the four days, students learned practical outdoor skills, built confidence, and developed leadership while surrounded by the beauty of the alpine environment.

Learning through experience

The first afternoon hike took the group to the CSIRO Rabbit Hut, where they learned about past efforts to control rabbit populations in the area. That night, a wild storm rolled in, testing the group’s teamwork and problem-solving skills.

On the second day, students crossed the icy waters of the Gungarlin River on their way to Botherum Plains Hut. They learned how to stay safe during water crossings and then relied on their maps and compasses for off-track navigation through thick vegetation and steep terrain. Reaching the summit of Mt Kalkite, the group enjoyed incredible views stretching across Lake Jindabyne.

A test of endurance

The third day was the toughest, with an 18-kilometre return hike to the remote Kidman’s Hut. Along the way, students passed Davey’s Hut and the remains of historic homesteads, spotting herds of brumbies on the open plains. Despite cold nights, tired legs and a few blisters, the students showed determination, resilience and strong team spirit throughout the journey.

A journey of growth

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is more than an adventure. It helps young people build independence, courage and leadership through real-world challenges. During this four-day journey, SMGS students showed strength of character, care for one another and pride in their achievements.

Thank you to Mr Deed, Mrs Whitehead and Mrs Bell for guiding and supporting our students on this memorable experience in the wilderness.
