This winter, Snowy Mountains Grammar School Digital Media students have taken their classroom learning into the real world by producing the weekly ABC South East snow report.
Turning Skills Into Real-World Experience
Unlike a fictional assignment assessed only by teachers and peers, this project had a genuine audience across the Snowy Mountains, the Monaro/Southern Tablelands, and the Far South Coast. Students knew their reports had to be researched, relevant, and reliable.
To prepare, students received specialist training in weather communication. Craig Sheppard from Mountain Safety Collective visited SMGS to share his workflow in forecasting snow and weather conditions for Mt Kosciuszko and the main range. Students explored the forecasting tools and sites he uses daily—an invaluable insight that gave them the confidence to begin producing accurate weekend snow reports.
From Data to Broadcast
Armed with this knowledge, students built a forecasting spreadsheet to track and interpret data for Friday to Sunday. They also researched upcoming events in and around the resorts to enrich their scripts. Each Thursday evening, the final reports were recorded and prepared for broadcast the following morning.

Student Voices on Air
Over the term, a number of Digital Media students have taken their turn behind the microphone, delivering the weekly “Go Snow” report. The feedback from listeners has been overwhelmingly positive, with reliable forecasts and engaging delivery helping the local community prepare for their weekends on the slopes.

Why It Matters
Opportunities like this showcase why subjects such as Digital Media are so vital in today’s education. Students gain hands-on experience with the tools and technologies that bring stories and information to life, while developing transferable skills that will serve them well in future workplaces.
